Customize The Command Prompt

Written by Saman Sadeghi on March 6, 2007 Add comments

I am a fan of the Command Prompt I admit it (it’s used for all of the Batch files I write), but just like everything else in life, it could use some tweaking!

First off, type Windows Key+R, then: cmd

How To Get To Properties

Right-click on the Command Prompt’s title bar (it the blue bar that should read C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe) and select Properties. The keyboard shortcut for Properties is: ALT+SPACEBAR+P

One of my biggest irritations is how small the window is, so lets start there:

Change Window Size

Click the Layout tab and change the window to fit your taste. I like the width at 100 and the height at 40, but your mileage may very.

Change The Buffer Size

Over in the Options tab, under the “Command History” section, increase the Buffer size to 999. This will the window’s vertically scroll.

You can also increase the number of lines in the Command Prompt window to 5000 by increasing the number of buffers to five!

Reuse Commands

Another option in the “Command History” section is the Discard Old Duplicates checkbox. In the Command Prompt, you can use the Up and Down arrows to scroll through a list of recently used commands and the Discard Old Duplicates checkbox will delete duplicated commands from the list.

Copy/Paste From The Command Prompt

In the “Edit Options” section check the check box for QuickEdit Mode. This will let you copy and paste from the Command Prompt window! To copy, hold the left mouse button and highlight, and then right-click. To paste in the command prompt, single right-click. To paste any where else, right-click and select “Paste” or CRTL+V.

Change Font And Colors

You can change the font under the Font tab to Lucinda Console. I don’t, but you can - I’ll allow it ;)

Under the Colors tab, you can customize the look of the window. How about this red and teal number:

Here is what I use, it reminds me of the Matrix…

Save The Changes

When you click the OK button, make sure you check the “Save properties for future windows with the same title” check box. This will open every Command Prompt window, from now on, with your customization.

Thanks for the post. There were some options here that I had never bothered to explore but have now implemented for my use.

It’s funny to see your window as I use the same black/green combo on my command prompt.

[…] we all know and . . . cough . . . love, Saman. Recently blogged about the good ol’days of DOS command prompts. I’m old enough to remember when you had to type in every command manually, none of this […]

The green characters on the black background reminded me the dumb terminals that were better than the punch card machine. :-)

I’m not using dos command prompt that much now but definitely I know where to find the info when I need it.

    Hey this is pretty cool.

Hey Saman, I am having troubles with my cache or something. I am getting my old websites. IT only happens to some of my websites. It also only happens when I put http://www. in front of the domain.

I have done the ipconfig and flushed I have also cleared out my cache in my browser. I use firefox, mostly and IE7.
I have unplugged my modems and turned off my computers for a few minutes.

Normally it goes away and then comes back a week or so later.

It always defaults back to January 13th.. which is when I switched to another webhost.

    Any clues?

Sounds like we need to open up a Q/A forum here.

I also have questions, slightly off topic guys. If you guys ever visit my site, did you see the long list in ‘Categories’ on the right sidebar? WP2.0.7 didn’t have those entra links for what I put in the left side bar such as Personal Link etc in the ‘Categories’ part.

    Any pointer?

    Thanks.

Q and A would be good. Any ideas on my problem with the old cache or something that won’t go away?

I don’t think this is a domain name problem: http://www.samanathon.com is different then http://samanathon.com

Unfortunately, that is all I know!

I always forget to do this and will have to remember. Been doing a lot of Microsoft SharePoint work lately, which includes command line interaction, gets confusing for a windows guy to write command line prompts!

Not a big fan of smigrate and spadm for sharepoint :(

Thats pretty cool, I never thought to mod the command prompt, didnt even know you could.

Personally I write batch in notepad, whats the benefit of using the prompt?

Also, I just noticed the mouse over on your link which brings up a nice blue box with the URL, is that a plug in or part of the template?

You have some nice toys plugged into this site, I put the print button on one of my blogs after seeing it here, there is also an e-mail plug in (by the same author I think) which Im hoping people may use to refer me….

Well, the batch files you write are executed by the Command Prompt! I use the CP directly for quick one-line instructions!

The tool-tip plugin is WS ToolTips.
