I just found AwkwardTV’s site, and I am very impressed! There are quite a few plugins for AppleTV, which you can find in the AwkwardTV Plugins Directory. There are a lot of great plugins in there like, RSS Readers, Weather, Sports and more. There is a game and plugins that will wake up remote media servers and even quit the AppleTV interface – all with your remote!
In this video, alanquatermain demos an upcoming plugin, written by Xdog, that will let you watch YouTube videos right from within the AppleTV’s user interface. The beta version of the plugin has the following menu options:
- Recently Featured Videos
- Week’s Most Viewed
- Week’s Most Discussed
- Month’s Most Viewed
- Month’s Most Discussed
- Settings – Were you setup the cache, so videos that have been downloaded will be saved the the AppleTV’s hard drive!
This is what I love about the computer word – people creating functionality that should have been included but wasn’t! Hacking software and hardware and making it your own!!

i must say what made me comment was your punch line! loved it!
What a great little hack! Thanks for sharing. I’m going to go try it right now. Very cool!
I’ve been looking for a way to download videos and I found it here! Thanks man!
WOO WOO . . an apple tip on Saman’s blog . . . i never thought it would happen . . . .so I have this AppleTV and I’ve heard so much about hacking it . . . since I’m not even close to being a hacker, you think you could write a little piece about how I can start my career as one? . . . . keep up the great work Saman . . sorry I haven’t been around much . . i’ll try to fix that soon!
Well, hacking an AppleTV would involve learning a programing language – although, this isn’t really “hacking”, it’s creating functionality….
I believe OSX is a version of BSD, so you would have to learn Linux!
I think as soon as I get in my new house I’ll be purchasing an AppleTv box. It would be pretty sweet to surf youtube from the couch.
