When was the last time you backup your WordPress database!? I bet it was a while ago – keep your blog safe and do it now! It’s easy:
- Log into your Dashboard
- Click Manage then Backup
- If any of your plugins are using tables in your database, tick the ones you want to backup
- Select your “Backup Options” – what you want WordPress to do with the backup. I have mine sent to my Gmail account, so it’s saved on a different server then my site. Also, if my computer dies, I have a backup on the Internet!
- Click the Backup button!

I tried doing this again recently, but it said “backup.xxx” is not writeable. Luckily, my server automatically backs them up, but I wanted to do it on my hard drive. I thought that was weird.
I did a Google search and could only find one answer: http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/1934, hope it helps!
Thanks for the link, Saman. I’ll try that.
Hey derrich, I had the same problem.. I fixed it by changing the read/write permissions on the directory it creates..
Cool, thanks. I ended up doing that last night, actually. I guess that was the easiest way around it. I’m gonna get this new auto backup plugin goin.
The admin of our server does this for me nightly on all of our sites. I have in the past used cPanel to do backups when installing upgrades, might have to give this a try in the future also.
This is exactly how I do it now. It’s awesome. I was just attempting to do it another way. Oh well. I upgraded my version of WP last night, so I was fiddling.
My host does nightly backups too, it’s just nice having copy, on another server, that I have immediate access to!
I need to do this, I haven’t done this yet…I’ll get on it…
Thanks for the reminder! I will get on this today!
Saman (need i sat athon(g)) since I dont use WP i have nothing to say about WP backups… but check out the first line of the post..
When was the last time your WordPress database!?
you backed up
is missing
FWIW, you can actually schedule the backup with the WP plugin to take place at regular intervals. I’ve actually got mine sending a backup to my email account once per week.
What plugin does that?! That would be very helpful!
I have that option in my Backup plugin, it isn’t a separate plugin. On my Backup screen, I scroll down to the very bottom and there is a section about scheduling a backup.
Let me clarify as I just realized there is a difference. The site I have setup to do the scheduled backup has v2.0.1 of the Backup plugin but my other site has v1.8 and that option is not there.
I just noticed that I was using an older version too, I updates to the latest and all is good! Thanks bud!
No problem…I need to do the same on my other site. I’ve been lazy with those backups because my host does a complete backup but I think I will update and schedule a weekly backup like my other site.
Thanks for the reminder! Just backed-up successfully!
Yeah, I download a backup to my HD about once a week. How come your WP dashboard looks so trendy Saman?
It’s a plugin that changes the CSS around. It’s the SpotMilk plugin and there are a few different styles!
is that what gives you the hover effects on your main links?
That would be the WS ToolTips plugin!
I’m afraid I don’t run any active Wordpress installations but having backup as part of the core engine is a great idea. This sort of thing should be turned on by default and you should have to provide an email address as part of the initial config for the site.
It would save so many people…
Cpanel is reall great for managing websites and server reources`~”
cpanel is very important when managing the stuffs on your webhost ,’,
Saman. Thanks very much for this! I have had some trouble recently with passwords with WordPress, but it seems sorted now!
Your write-up snapped up the awareness from the very beginning. Your content articles are exactly that interesting. I much like your views on this specific topic whilst your publishing.
