What the hell is Disney’s problem?!
I am so irritated by the way Disney authors their DVDs. I have had these issues for a while but they were really solidified with the Baby Einstein DVDs. When Roya was really little and was whining, one of our tricks to calm her down was to throw in one of the Baby Einstein videos. The problem is that you have to sit through a ton of ads, logos and copyright warnings before you get to the main menu! The worst part of it all? You can’t skip them! This is not acceptable when you have a screaming infant!
The Baby Einstein DVDs should auto-start the movie and auto-repeat. When I have time, I can check out the other items on the discs. I am sure that every parent who owns these DVDs has seen the intro videos a thousand times - and you have to sit through this crap every single time!
This brings me to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (we have the 2-Disc Special Edition. This will be relevant in the next section). Roya gave this to Taylor as a Christmas present. Not only do you have to sit through the same copyrights and warnings, but you have to watch their “Sneak Peaks” - Disney’s label for “previews”.
Will these previews still be relevant in a year? NOPE! They have included a link for you view these within the menu - so why do I have to watch them every single time I want to watch the movie?!?!?
Damn Advertising
This brings to a special feature on Disc One titled “Bloopers of the Caribbean”. When you select the link, you get to see this bit of advertising before the video starts:

WHAT THE HELL?!?!? Now there is advertising on DVD’s?! This pisses me off! I know that Disney has advertising on the attractions at the Parks, but this is unacceptable. I hate that we are so inundated with advertising! I have no desire to see a Verizon Wireless ad every time I watch this. This really makes me not want to watch this special feature again.
What Choice Do We Have?
I am tech savvy enough to rip and re-author the discs without all of this garbage but why should I have to? Not to mention the cost and time involved in re-authoring these DVD’s. I have paid for these DVDs and why should I have to watch the ads?! I did not paid to watch advertising!! What about those who don’t own a DVD burner? They’re screwed!
Damn you Disney.
Any ideas as to where i could buy a DVD or VCR with the six episodes of the 1957-58 Disney TV series “The Saga of Andy Burnett”? Thanks for your time Mike B
Not really….
I did a quick Froogle search for you though!
My god you are a whiny little bitch. Try this…press menu when the previews start and VOILA, it takes you to the menu. That was difficult.
As for the advertising, cry me a river. Big f*cking deal. There’s advertising in movies. You gonna stop watching those too? Why dont you find something IMPORTANT to whine about.
Wow, you’re really angry!
Just so you know, the menu button is deactivated so you’re solution wouldn’t work.
Jamie-What he says is true…the menu button, and for that matter all buttons, are disabled during these ads. It is really irritating, especially if you have already bought it. Also, having a two-year old, I can totally relate that you want to be able to start the thing right away.
Personally, one of the main reasons I stopped going to movies, besides the fact that there aren’t very many worth spending $10 on, is the 30 minutes of advertising that you have to sit through before the movie starts. Heck, I don’t even watch anything live on tv anymore, I tivo it so that I can go back and fast-forward through all the crappy commercials.
I 100% agree with the article and I believe that this is the kind of stuff that increases pirating of DVDs.
Not to mention that in 5 years, you’ll still be seeing the ad that reads “Coming Summer 2002!“
While I agree entirely, “initiated” is a poor choice of words that doesn’t fit this context. I think you meant “inundated”.
I hate when advertising is used in a product I’ve paid for. I didn’t buy something to look at ads!
All i can say is ovguilde.com
I have no guilt in buying a dvd , game , music , etc.
Then watching it ad-free .
