I just started using StumbleUpon and I have a huge pet peeve with the was some sites resize my browser window - I hate it! If it bugs you too, here is a simple fix for this “problem”:
- On Firefox’s toolbar, click “Tools” then “Options”
- In the “Options” dialog, click the “Content” tab
- Next to the Enable JavaScript check box, click the “Advanced” button

- Uncheck the ‘Move or resize existing windows’ checkbox

- Click “OK” in all dialogs
You’re all done!
That’s an interesting tip Saman. I’d heard of people completely turning off javascript before to stop the page getting hijacked or redirected but I always thought that was too extreme. It’s nice to know that Firefox give you some granular control over the settings. I had never clicked on the advanced button before.
THANK YOU!!!!!!! that was a huge pet peeve of mine.
You’re welcome Johnny!
I really love how easily Firefox is to configure!
If Opera users want to to the same thing go to Tools–>Preferences–>Advanced–>Content–>Javascript Options.
You can turn of the desired options there.

Great tip man, thanks, it will save my time spent on resizing back
good tip saman though i’m the brute force kind of person. haha
sidetrack: i find stumble upon kinda useless. especially when you install that toolbar, then you get a random site, well just my opinion
I don’t care about the random sites, and only use it to bookmark.
That’s the point of StumbleUpon - Random sites!
Yep, I know…but I still do not use it for this.
It’s nice to know other people are annoyed by this. I am going to fix it right now.
Great find on this tip
I was stumbling a couple weeks back and had way to many sites resizing….drove me insane.
I finally looked and looked in the options until I found it.
Why didn’t you post this a month ago
I posted this tip over at my site a while back (http://www.teckh.com) and someone suggested instead of this, you can add a little extra protection by using the firefox no-scripts plug-in. It stops this little annoyance and many others caused by scripts. Good tip.
In today’s Web 2.0′ish world, everybody is ajax’ing and using javascript for items left and right. Websites are becoming more than websites, they are becoming online applications. I’m always very weary of disabling javascript because many sites use it so much. I suppose it has never really bothered me that much to where I have been to sites that use resizing codes. Or perhaps they do code that in and it fits the app I am working with.
I agree, that’s why I haven’t disabled it completely!
Hopefully that will be a heads up to webmasters that set their pages to resize. What are they thinking? It’s obviously annoying.
I can understand the idea in a world before tabbed browsing - although I still don’t agree with it!
Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! glcbhcuucoaxq
Saman is the man. The only thing I’m surprised not to see is an ad for In & Out.
Great job on the tips.
Keep them coming
Thankyou so much!
