On my post on my Goals For March, Nathan asked a question that I thought would be better to answer in a post, here’s his question:

What type of traffic levels do you see from this jump?
As you all can see from the graph below, my site traffic for February 2007 averaged around 1,500 page views with the most traffic coming on February 21, with about 2,800 page views.

The only articles I posted on the 21st were: New Feature: Friday Grooves and Take That Spammers!!. I don’t attribute the high traffic because of those post, I just noted it for your inquiring minds! By the way, that day had the most traffic then any other day in the history of Samanathon.com.
Here is the graph for March traffic, keep in mind that we are only four days into the month!

As you can see, my page views for yesterday doubled the the traffic the site got on it’s busiest day!
Like I keep saying, it really pays to network!!
I really have to thank John Chow. If it wasn’t for John’s site, I wouldn’t have been able to meet so many other users! And I can’t forget all of you – without you, I wouldn’t have anything on these pretty graphs!
You all get something from this too, I want to share the love: Since I have installed the Show Top Commentators, the top ten commentators get free linkbacks! Also, I have started Speed Linking and will pick from the top commentators to link to – so you get another link from a blog that is currently rated 41,135 by Technorati – which, with the way my rank is skyrocketing, is great for you so keep those comments coming!!
Thanks for the insight and the backlink. What would you say your levels of unique visitors are?
No worries, I am pretty liberal with linkbacks – interact with this site and you get benefits!
As for unique visitors: February averaged around 800 a day, and March is averaging about 950!
Wow, that is alot of uniques! Wish I could pocket some of it myself.
Hi Saman,
Youve done a really good job building this site / traffic, how much time have do you spend on it?
More interestingly, whats it earning, I saw a comment on JC where you said you were now able to buy more Diapers
Well, the earning hasn’t really picked up to much yet, but I just changed some things around – So I’ll let you guys know when things start to pick up!
Do you get much google traffic?
I ton – about 60%!!
Where are you pulling your stat’s from, I ask as the figures churned out of different software packages vary wildly, I tend to use AW Stats, Webalizer less often. I thin AW Stats gives a better picture, it picks up more google search phrases and shows less visitors.
I dont think Webalizer shows uniques.
800 Uniques a day is pretty good going.
Do you have the Alexa plug in on your browser (there is a firefox plug in available from Mozilla)
If not its worth you getting that as you boost your Alexa ranking while running your own site.
A lot of people consider Alexa worthless as its so easily rigged, but reviewMe and others use it as a metric (as Im sure you know), so for the time it takes to install it into your browser its worth doing, IMO
I get my stats from my host, I would imagine they would know better then anyone!
Saman, what stats package does your host use? The reason I ask is I see quite a difference between AwStats via my host compared to something like SiteMeter.
Do you have SiteMeter tracking your site? I’d be interested to hear how different the two are for you.
It doesn’t show what stats package their running, I guess it’s their own version…
I don’t have SiteMeter running, should I look into it?
SiteMeter is worth looking into, I always like to see a variety of stats on my website and they have a fair amount of data available on visitors to your site.
Another option for comparison is Google Analytics. Have you looked into that at all?
Yeah, I am actually running that – I use as many Google services as I can!
My hits are also skyrocketing as well as my technorati ranking.
I noticed a jump when I linked you and you linked me back.
I did to – that’s why I have added a bunch of links to my Blogroll, I thought it was time to share the wealth with the community – after all, I wouldn’t have the rank without you guys!
I’ve noticed my technorati rank increasing as well and my traffic has had a nice bump as well. While I haven’t hit the levels you are at right now, it is still building.
Keep up the good work!
Good to hear! I am a firm believer in getting out there in the community – you can write all the great content you want, but if no one knows you’re there….
Exactly…when I first started my site I thought I was writing some good quality content but there weren’t any readers to see it.
Participating at John’s site and Stephen’s site have brought me more readers and also getting active on other blogs related to my niche has really helped.
I was surprised how little traffic I got from Johns blog given for a link in the top commentors and for the reveiew I did month or so back, I think you have a better approach visiting other related blogs.
Great job Saman. Keep up the great blogging!
Keep it up buddy, I’m glad to see its working great for you!
Thanks for the comments guys!
I just hope I can get a ride on your wagon too. My number is still in lower 200K thanks for all the links from your top posting section, and I just added a link to your site few moments ago. Hope it works well for us.
No worries, you’ve participated on this site a few times and that means you’ve helped me out! Just my way of giving back to the community!
Since you have successfully installed ‘Related Post’ Saman, can I ask you a quick question (for free
). No, seriously. I don’t know where to find this when I read the instruction in Mr. Wasabi’s Wiki:
“You will notice a “Related Posts Options” tab under your “Plugins” tab. If this is your first time installing this plugin please click the link for index table setup script at the bottom of the options page. ”
I didn’t see any link for index table setup script at the bottom of the options page.
Where is it?
Thanks.
DRT, go to your Plugins Tab and click “Related Posts Options” on the sub-navigation bar (the dark blue bar).
You should see the configuration options for the Related Posts plugin. At the end of the page, you should see “SQL Index Table Setup”. Look in the sentence for the link that reads:
…will have to run this script (opens a new window)…
Hope this helps, let me know!
Also, if you want to add related posts to your RSS feed, check out the Add Related Posts to Your Feed plugin.
Thanks again Saman. I don’t know why but I only have 3 tabs in my plugins:
* Plugins
* Plugin Editor
* Akismet Configuration
It is too late now. I will take a look at it after work tomorrow. I will also check the link above.
Good morning from here.
Have you activated the plugin? Before you see this option you will have to activate the plugin on your site.
That was going to be my next suggestion. If that doesn’t help, try deactivating, erasing, uploading and activating!
Thanks, guys. It was funny, I tried to activate it few times last night but could not see it. After reading this I tried to activate, didn’t work. I then cycled the wp-admin and voila! It’s there now. As you guys can see, the only thing I need is a small dancing icon to follow the evil leaders.
Thank you, thank you and thank you!
Glad to hear that your blog is really taking off!
Saman, you are a wonder! Great to see another successful example of traffic building!
Thanks bud, but don’t think I’ll let you write more comments then me!
You mean to say that you got all this traffic just from John’s site???
Well, you never know. But you can be sure some of them are.
No, not all of it. I have made a mark on many sites, but most of it does come from John’s site!
I’ve just come from John’s site and I’m a first time visitor. I have to say I really like your layout.
Those are some good numbers you’re producing now. May I ask how long you’ve been up and running with this site?
I opened doors in October 2006, but as you can see from the graphs, it wasn’t until I started getting my name out there that traffic picked up!
Like what ‘Blogging for Dummies’ say, unless you take the initiative to go out and promote yourself, there is fat chance of getting noticed!
I’m still in the Stone Age, anyone want to exchange links? hahaha!
I’ve been learning a lot of things from you guys!
Congrats on the traffic increase!! perhaps because of your post whoring
Congrats, and always a pleasure reading your comments and posts..
That’s good to hear, I was beginning to wonder if I was getting a bad reputation!
I thought what you’ve done was fun and I’m glad that because of it, we are starting to congregate here instead of the evil place that is so crowded and not everyone gets that much attention they need.
I don’t know when should you stop, though. Some big shot needs to write a blog on you and your rank would definitely up again.
I agree. Another news coverage on a zero to hero blogger! Now that should make the headlines, somewhere..
I was wondering if anyone can tell me why I don’t show up in recent readers??
I have a MyBlogLog account, even if I log in and come back I don’t seem to show up, does it track the number of visits or something??
I went to MBL and didn’t see your picture there. Did you upload your pict?
Naa, too ugly, is that a requirement?
Only if you want your pic to show up in the list of recent readers.
I believe that I had read people without a pic would not display in the MBL widget on people’s sites unless they had a pic enabled on their profile.
As you can see by other people, you don’t have to use a real pic of yourself although I do have my ugly mug as mine.
Thanks for the reply, I was planning on uploading a pic, I only registered yesterday and havent been able to find anything suitably obscene
Ill have to get onto that, I think the recent readers is pretty cool.
I havent bothere with all this bloggins stuff before, I was using wordpress for a google targetted informaiton site before, but with my other blog I will be making more of an effort,
Thanks for your help,
Jez
Or any free, funny pictures that you find online.
Your bloggers can then see when you have visited them.
On feb 21, how many unique visitors did you have just out of curiosity?
How many counts will it register if I went there 30 times that day for example to read various comments? Would that be one unique visitor or 35 visitors? Was that the reason you ask, Jane? Just curious too.
It shows I had 711 on 2/11/07!
Damn!
How are you doing now a few more days into this month?
Still hovering around 6,000!
Hi Saman,
Have you seen this:
http://alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsamanathon.com
Very nice
Saman – I really suggest using StatCounter or something. I use statcounter and it gives a HUGE difference in results than the counter provided by my host. My host results are about double my statcounter.
With statcounter you can stop your own page views from counting.
Oh, that’s a good suggestion!
