My regular job (because I’m not a Dot Com Mogul yet) is a Production Technician - basically I get to play with high tech audio & video equipment all day. I was recently in Hawaii (that explains the lack of updates) and had to set up two 2×5 Plasma Video Walls.
What Is A 2×5 Plasma Video Wall?
A 2×5 Plasma Video Wall is a video wall which is made up of ten seemless plasma monitors. There were two rows and five columns of plasmas. The entire setup is monitored and controlled by a control computer and the signal is sent from a playback computer.
Setup Pictures
Here you can see the mounting brackets for the bottom row of screens. We built it on the ground and will use the Ginnie lift (the metal machine in the foreground with the vertical red paint) to lift it into the structure.

You can see both top and bottom rows of mounting brackets. We carried each piece of the top row up individually using the ladders. Just like the screens, there were ten brackets.

Were are ready to open the road cases and take the screens out. Each road case (black cases to the left of the frame) carries three plasma screens.

You can see that I am screwing in the hanging tools into the top of the screen (the screen is the silver objects in the cases).

We’ve hung three of the ten monitors.

We’re done hanging all of the monitors for this wall. Each screen weighs about 60 pounds.

Now we need to wire all of the monitors together.

Each plasma gets a signal cable (white serial cable) and are daisy-chained together. Then we run a DVI cable (black) to each monitor from a Distribution Amplifier. We also run power to each monitor, they use about 2 amps a piece (after powerup) and the entire wall is run by three circuits - and a fourth for the control equipment.

Here you can see that the video wall is powered up and receiving signal! I like to run the MatrixMania Screensaver because it looks so cool!

Video
Here is a video of the completed wall (sorry about the lame voice over, I was feeling a little goofy) . Each wall took about four hours to complete - but thats only because I’m a badass. It would have taken the AngryNetworker all day because he’s fat and lazy
Bonus Material
Here’s another wall that I set up in Toronto. It was a 3×3 wall.

This is a shot of the control area - we didn’t have a lot of room to work with, so all of the equipment ended up behind the screens. The far computer is the control machine, the near one is the playback computer and the audio mixer is hanging there to the right.

Here is the Transformers trailer in high definition! I’m standing there so you can get an appreciation for the size of the monitors.

Wow! that’s some hard work there.

let me check the HD of transformers first..
Damn, I imagined you to have a deep and menacing voice!
Crazy work you do, btw. What kind of setup do you have at home?
Actually, I have a really basic setup at home, standard 31″ CRT TV with DVD and VHS.
I have a wife and two small kids so I can’t really have a crazy mission-control style setup…
Dude! You are a badd Ass! Wicked cool!
That’s a pretty sweet setup, now to get rid of those nasty little lines.
I agree, I’m not a fan of the “cross hairs” but you can’t see them from 10+ feet away (which is where the audience would be).
The other option would be to install an LED wall (like the Jumbotron at stadiums) but you’d have to be farther away then 10 feet!
Nice and interesting job you had.
Sounds like a really great job, travel and playing around with high end electronic equipment!
Yay…you got a trip to Hawaii. Congrats on that.
Hmmm Hawaii, I am envious, even if it was for work. Hope you got to catch some waves while you were there.
that’s awesome. great job with the monitors. i love that screen saver you used! did you get to go to the beach??
I did actually, a few times - the coolest experience was swimming in the ocean at night - it was like being on a deserted island!
It is really impressive!
I want one to my room
Wow excellent work. i had always wondered how those things were set up with such Precision. i love the royal noir theme aswell, ive got it circulated on all of the computers at college and at home now ^^.
