Here are my all time, Number 1, Bestest, Way Gooder Add-ons for Mozilla’s email client, Thunderbird. Why eight?

There were nine, but one plugin doesn’t like TB2 so it’s out! I added another plugin to the list, so there are officially nine.

Here’s the list in alphabetical order:

1. Buttons!
   With the Buttons! plugin, you can add a ton of buttons to any tool bar! There are a ton that you would think should be there but aren’t, this add-on takes care of that for you.
2. GMailUI
   This add-on adds a lot of powerful ideas from GMail to Thunderbird, like archiving mail and powerful message searching across all folders with operators like: from: or subject: and much, much more!
3. Lightning
   Lightning is a full featured calender plugin with very tight integration with Thunderbird. If you like the calendar in Outlook, you should give this a shot! Read my Lightning vs Sunbird review.
4. Mark All Read Button
   Marks all items (mail or RSS) in the current folder as read.
5. MinimizeToTray
   Outlook 2003 has this feature and now Thunderbird does to! It allows Thunderbird to be open without running in a window - but you will still get all notifications as normal.
6. Plaxo
   Plaxo is an online contact management system. The plugin monitors all changes to your contacts, uploads them to their server and syncs your data against all of your computers - even if you use multiple email/address book programs or operating systems. Better yet, if any of your contacts are Plaxo users too, and they change some information (like a new address or phone number) your address card for that user is automagically updated!
7. Provider For Gmail Calender
   This is one of my favorites! It allows Lightning to read and write events to any of your Google Calendars! The updates are instant! You can even assign colors to different calendars just like with Google Calendar! Also, I love exclamation points! Happy Day!!
8. Webmail
   The Webmail add-on allows you to check and send mail from the most popular web based email clients. As of now, you can use Yahoo, Hotmail, Lycos (Europe), MailDotCom, Gmail, Libero, and AOL (although, you don’t need the plugin to add a Gmail account, it’s part of Thunderbird).
9. DoD
   I actually don’t use this add-on but it was too cool not to include in the list! It sets up Thunderbird so you can use within the Department of Defense! You can also use this plugin with Firefox, check out the feature list:
   • Turns on auto-updates
   • Imports DoD Root Certificates from http://dodpki.c3pki.chamb.disa.mil
   • Setup of CAC Reader driver
   • Clarifies SSL error when Common Access Card (smartcard) not present (Firefox)
   • Indicate when using trusted domain websites (.mil), similar to SSL (Firefox)
   • Redirect to HTTPS when HTTP connection fails (Firefox)
   • Sets up DoD LDAP Address Book (Thunderbird)
   • Turns off image loading and javascript (Thunderbird)
   • Setup of mail signing (Thunderbird)
   • Looks at mail headers and warns if mail originates from outside of trusted domain (.mil) (Thunderbird)
   • Selection of Threat Level (Thunderbird)
