Registry Hack: Disable Disk Cleanup Wizard Compression Calculation

Written by Saman Sadeghi on March 22, 2007 Add comments

Before we start, please read this important information on editing your system’s registry.

In the past, I wrote an article on Automating Disk Cleanup, this article is for users who still want to manually run the Disk Cleanup Wizard which you can find by navigating to: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup.exe

The Screencast

I have produced my very first Screencast for this How To! View the Disable Disk Cleanup Wizard Compression Calculation Screencast!

What This Does

This Registry Hack will disable the Disk Cleanup Wizard from calculating the space that could be saved by compressing the drive, which, if you have a large drive or a couple of drives, could take a while. It’s a time saver: it skips the calculation time and goes right to the dialog where you can choose what to clean.

The Disk Cleanup Progress Bar

Open the Registry Editor by hitting the Windows Key+R and typing: regedit

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress Old Files

In the right panel, double-click the (Default) key. Clear the text in the “Value data” text field.

The Registry Key For Disabling The Disk Cleanup Compression Calculation

Click the “OK” button and close the Registry! The next time you run the Disk Cleanup Wizard, you will jump directly to the Disk Cleanup dialog!

The Disk Cleanup Menu

Congrats on your very first [screen|pod]cast :!:

Very useful, I hated how long Disk Cleanup spent calculating the compression time, since I never wanted to compress anything in the first place.

Thanks! Did you enjoy it? Should I do more screencasts? You should really check out my post on Automating Disk Cleanup - you can do it with one double-click or set the Task Scheduler to do it for you!

    Yep, well done.

Should I do more screencasts? :
Sure, definite, why not? I would just standardize what term you are going to use, I think in the “screencast” itself, you call it a “podcast” - to me, its one and the same, but just for the sake of organization, you may want to standardize them as the “Samanathon Podcasts” or the “Samanathon Screencasts” - your choice of course

True, I actually did produce a podcast from this screencast, but I’m having issues submitting them to iTunes….

I’ve always turned off “automatically detect when diskspace is low” because my disk space is always low and disk cleanup took forever to run!

very useful. when I haven’t had a disk cleanup in a long time it takes a while to calculate.

Do you know if default value is the same for every computer? Just in case I ever want it back, which I probably wouldn’t?
