Why I Love Google Browser Sync

Written by Saman Sadeghi on February 16, 2007 Add comments

I read an article on Life Hacker.com that compared Google Browser Sync to Foxmarks and, according to them, Foxmarks was the better plugin. Their reasoning is that it is the winner if all you’re syncing are your bookmarks.

I have been Google Browser Sync for a few months now and I absolutely love it, but I want everything synced and Google’s plugin does just that. It syncs the following across computers:

  • bookmarks
  • history
  • persistent cookies
  • saved passwords
  • open tabs
  • browser sessions

It really is one of my favorite plugins. All of your stuff is saved on Google’s servers. While some might see this as a negative thing, I see it as a positive: The server will never go down and you can encrypt all of your data. I use it to sync data from my desktop, laptop and Portable Firefox (which I have on a flash drive), and since it is a Firefox plugin it will work on a PC, Mac and Linux box!

If you have Firefox set to save your passwords and you are using the Master Password (which you should be!), Google Browser Sync will prompt you to enter the password before the browser even opens! That means that it makes your browser secure from thieves, if the password is wrong or not entered, it doesn’t sync and passwords won’t be entered!

Now You Are A Master

Just make sure that your password is strong enough. Luckily, Firefox is a great browser and will help you out there too! Not a user? Try Firefox - it’s free and you wont find these features on Internet Explorer!

I also installed this on Firefox. As someone who works on 3 separate machines throughout the week, Browser Sync has been a life saver. I’ve never used the Master Password option before and will definitely try it out this week.
