I’ve shown you how to group group similar windows on the Taskbar via a registry hack. Here’s how to accomplish the same task via the GUI.
How To
- Right-click your Taskbar and click Properties.
- Under the Taskbar tab, tick the “Group similar taskbar buttons” option.

- Click the “OK” button.
I wish it would group them even when there is room on the taskbar. Nice option either way.
Isnt this the default behavior in windows xp and vista?
Only when there are three (I think) windows of that group open.
Nice little tip, and you are correct, the default is to group them when thee are three
Alternativly, you can specify the required number of same-app windows present before grouping occurs.
Go to:
HKEY_CURRRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AdvancedCreate a new D-Word (32-bit) value.
Name it “TaskbarGroupSize” (without quotes)
Set the value to the number of same-app windows — 2 for example. (Be sure to keep the hexidecimal button to the right selected).
Done!
You may need to kick around/toggle the taskbar grouping option to have the setting stick. To undo the setting, simply delete the D–Word key you created and kick/toggle the grouping option again.
