Windows Tip: Shrink Your Recycle Bin

Written by Saman Sadeghi on January 3, 2007 Add comments

Do you want to has much storage as possible on your machine? ME TOO!

In this handy tip, we will learn how to put the squeeze on the Recycle Bin!

Some Information

On a default install, the Windows Recycle Bin sets aside 10% for deleted files, up to 3.99GB per partition. You might not think this is much, but on a 500GB drive with four partitions, the Recycle Bin could be using up 16 gigabytes of storage! This is also a problem for smaller drives - like a notebook with a 40GB drive.

Unless you are dealing with very large files, you realistically only need a small amount of storage in the Recycle Bin. One gig would be more then enough!

Take Out The Trash

Right click the Recycle Bin and click Properties.

Honey, Can You Take Out The Trash?

On the Global tab, click the “Configure drives independently” radio button.
What Is Good For One Is Not Good For Many!

Now go through the tabs for each of the drives and move the slider down to the level of storage that you want! Note that the “Space reserved” label will reflect the changes.
OH YEAH! Feel The Squeeze!

Remember to save the changes you have made!
