We really used the Task Scheduler quite a bit – I originally thought I would write this How-To using a lot more batch files – but that’s the great thing about modern computing, you can specify command line arguments (actually, that’s really more like retro computing
).
If everything went according to plan, your Schedules Tasks folder should look like this:

Each task is spaced out to allow enough time for the individual tasks to run, leaving the most time for the defragment process. As hard drives grow larger, and the amount of fragmentation increases, this task may need a lot more time to run (although, if you’re running it weekly, that time should decrease). You can edit any of these times to fit your needs, just double-click the task and click the Schedule tab.
great series Saman!
Nice job on the series Saman!
You are going to put Geek Squad out of business…with all these cleaned up computers.
And I’m not lying to you like they do!
Hi Saman that was a long set of posts…Post something different fora change
You didn’t like the series?
I thought most users would get a kick out of it since it’s a simple way to optimize their machines!
Hey I didn’t say I don’t like the post. I actually like the way you write the – I have also started a series inspired from you.
What I meant was with posts being continuous it was almost monotonous.
I actually thought of that too – especially if a visitor doesn’t care about the subject…
Oh well, glad to hear that you liked it!
Cant beat a little automation, I will shortly write a post on how I got into programming… allowing me to finish my work by 11:30 am every day
I have read the whole series. A must read for everyone!
My only problem with this approach is that it requires you to keep your computer powered up unattended.
I have had personal experience with having various things crash and burn from storms, including losing a scanner and a printer, keyboards, etc.
Scares me now. I turn my computer off at night and when I am away, or know that there is a storm approaching.
True – but that’s a great reason for a UPS (which I kill when I travel too)!
love the series, saman
u did a great job on it
Nice tips – very useful and I liked the way you presented them.
Thanks!
