Why Do I Need A “Fresh Computer”?
Some people just don’t shutdown their computers – and that’s fine. The Windows code seems to have been optimized not slow down the longer it’s running, but there are some applications that are resource hogs, ie, bit torrent.

This is the First Step in the Fresh Computer Series.

- Automate A Reboot
- Automatically Open Your Browser

Step One-A: Folder Setup
We need to create a folder for a few files. Create a new folder titled “Clean Machine” (or whatever you wish) under Program Files:
C:\Program Files\Clean Machine
This is where you will save, and later call, all of the little “programs” that we’ll create.
Step One-B: Update Windows (Optional)
It really is essential that you keep Windows updated – the only reason that I say this is an optional step is because some Windows update require a restart and if you’re rendering video or something else over night, this will prevent that from finishing. A way around this is to have your computer download the updates and you can choose to install them when you wish.
- Open the Automatic Updates dialog by pressing the Windows Key+R and type:
wuaucpl.cpl - Choose the first radio button “Automatic (Recommended)“. Have Windows automatically download and install the recommend updates for your computer “Every day” at “3:00 AM”

Next, we can proceed to Fresh Computer Series Step Two: Automate Hard Drive Cleaning.
Saman,
Interesting information! Would you say that this should be done if you reguarly shut down your computer? I make it a point to let my desktop “rest” every night and seems to remain at fast processing speed.

If you shutdown your computer every night then you don’t really need all of these tips, but you could use:
Both of those tips will help keep your computer fresh, clean and optimized!
I’m preparing to wipe my whole computer tonight…wish me luck! I’ll be watching for tips for my new install
Thanks for the links! Will definitely start to use these on my computer.
This step is a necessary evil if you use windows as an OS. Makes you wonder about service packs, all the patches and updates.
Why can’t they get it right the first time?
I have to play the Devil’s advocate here – every major OS regularly patches their OS’s, Microsoft, Mac & every Linux distro….
I knew that you were going to come back with this reasoning. Actually, I figured you would blame it on all the hackers and attackers to MS.
The next question would then be why interest and purchase of Vista is down, as people have learned to wait at least for the first few updates, before investing in a less than steller product introduction.
(Par for the course, and totally expected by the masses I might add)
As for the hackers, they only target MS because they’re popular – and they MS must be doing something right if they have largest market share!
As for Vista, I can personally say that it feels more like a Service Pack for XP then a separate OS – and I see no reason to upgrade and, if I was buying a new computer, I might think about getting XP on it and not Vista as it’s such a resource hog…
Ha ha. I knew you would say this too. Somehow you miss my point. MS has trained us so well to just accept whatever they toss out there, as the latest and the greatest.
I think people will eventually wise up. That is why I am such a proponent of open source, which I think is not only the future, but very revealing as to the possibilities.
As Gates has reiterated on many occasions, he is only interested in 500 customers (The Fortune 500).

Ditto. Finally some support for the opposition. Thanks.
Yes, every OS has patches, but if you look at the number of patches that MS has – it is awful. Plus some of the “patches” force us to go to a new product (IE7). Even after one downloads the “OS7 blocker”, it did not work forever.
I use both MS and Mac, and it seems like Mac has less hastles. Oh, and if I was a gear-head, I have heard that Linux can run just fine on old hardware – seems to be a more efficient OS.
Thanks for the informative series Saman. My puter thanks you.
